15 Feb 2008 - Press Report
Swimmers from Frome have been very busy recently. Firstly it was the turn of the juniors to represent the club at Weston Super Mare for the Mendip Junior Challenge hosted by Wells and Shepton Mallet SC. There were plenty of nerves as for many this was the first time they had been involved in a competition, but with senior swimmers James Godwin and Carla Dessi doing an excellent job of encouraging the youngsters they all competed well and managed to achieve 16 personal best times.
The senior swimmers were in action at the first afternoon of the Somerset Counties series, held at Millfield. Several swimmers had entered the 800m and all achieved personal best times with Antony Lockyer being placed fourth and Dan Brown eighth in the senior male event. All these swimmers then had to travel back to Frome for the second round of the Cotswold League at home at Frome Leisure Centre.
Frome knew they had some stiff competition in clubs from Henleaze, Bishopsworth and Stroud B and this proved to be the case. Ray Gilburt, James Godwin, Dan Brown, Ryan Hann, Emily Dixon and Rachel Palarm were awarded 1st places and 50% of the individual events were swum in personal best times, but this wasn’t enough to keep Frome off the bottom spot with 105 points, being narrowly beaten by Stroud B on 113. Henleaze took 1st place over Bishopsworth with 167 points to Bishopsworth’s 133.
Coach Karen Pinniger said results were encouraging and that the swimmers are all working hard as can be seen by the improvements in their personal best times.
As always thanks go to all the volunteer helpers, team managers and officials who make these galas possible.
