Cotswold League, Round 2                                                                      Susie Hann

Frome knew they had some stiff competition with clubs from Henleaze, Bishopsworth and Stroud B and this proved to be the case. Ray Gilburt, James Godwin, Dan Brown, Ryan Hann, Emily Dixon and Rachel Palarm were awarded 1st places and 50% of the individual events were swum in personal best times. This however wasn’t enough to keep Frome off the bottom spot with 105 points, being narrowly beaten by Stroud B on 113. Henleaze took 1st place over Bishopsworth with 167 points to Bishopsworth’s 133. In addition many of the competitors had competed in the County championships distance event earlier in the afternoon.

Cotswold League, Round 3                                                                      Susie Hann

Frome were disappointed with the draw for this round, which saw them up against two of the fancied teams in the league in Cheltenham and Bristol Penguins with Backwell as the fourth. There was a pensive mood on the coach as they travelled to Easton, Bristol to compete. Once in the pool the nerves settled and there were some very good performances resulting in 1st places being awarded to Antony Lockyer in the Male Open Individual Medley, Rachel Palarm in the Female 25m Butterfly, Emily Dixon in the Female 50m Freestyle and Ryan Hann in the Male 25m Breaststroke. The Female Freestyle Relay team consisting of Abigail Hanney, Sophie Evans, Bryany Cornish and Emily Dixon were in one of the closest races of the day. With nothing to choose between the first three teams it was down to the place judges to separate them and Frome’s girls were awarded an excellent 1st. Personal best times were achieved in 10 of the races which raised cheers on the return journey in spite of Frome’s disappointing last place with 112 points to Backwell’s 121, Bristol Penguins’ 134 and Cheltenham’s 1st place 156.

Somerset County Championships (Weekends 1 & 2)

All swimmers posted personal best times, Anthony Lockyer finished 4th and Dan Brown 8th in the Men’s championship event.

The second weekend of the Somerset County Championships was held at Hutton Moor swimming pool (Weston-Super-Mare). We had 12 swimmers competing in a number of events over the weekend. All swimmers posted personal best times and some even did PBs at 100m of a 200m event – quite an achievement. Outstanding performances came from Anthony Lockyer in the 100m Fly final and from Luke Hibberd in the 200m Back both finished 7th in the county. Full results are below...

Swimmer of the Month

The swimmer of the month for February has worked consistently hard for the last 8 weeks. He listens hard and is applying stroke feedback well. He finished second in Somerset for the 200m Breaststroke. This is a huge achievement, since we are up against swimmers from Millfield School, Taunton Deane and Team Bath.

Well done:

Ryan Hann

Karen’s Top Tip

If you have a television or access to the internet you are the luckiest swimmers alive. March and April this year are very exciting times for swimmers. From the 31st March to the 5th April the Olympic Trials for swimming are being held at Ponds Forge, in Sheffield. Here Top British swimmers will compete for their chance to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

To add to the excitement of the Olympic Year, the World Short Course Championships are being held in Manchester on 9–13 April. Swimmers from all around the globe will be competing here in England in preparation for the Olympics. See sport live? Information for tickets can be found at: www.britishswimming.org or keep your eyes peeled on the sports channels/internet (www.britishswimming.org) for results.

Speedo League

The Speedo league is a team event held in the winter term and is a claiming date (see below). It has been decided that as part of our commitment to working together with Wells and Shepton Mallet SC, that this event will be swum as a joint venture under the name East Mendip.

Claiming Dates

Claiming dates are dates in the swimming calendar that are considered as exceptionally important dates for your diary. These are often team events and it is critical that you are available for these fixtures as we need to be able to field our best team. You may not be chosen to swim but we need to be able to call on you if required. We use this term very sparingly and only when it is imperative that you are available. The claiming dates this year are:

                        Southern Junior League (9-12 years)

                        19 April

                        17 May

                        21 June

                        Speedo League (9 and upwards)

                        11 October

                        8 November

                        13 December

Other Dates for your Diary

Last month I published that we would be attending the Tigersharks open meet in June. I have since found out that this meet in only open to Wiltshire county swimmers. We will instead be attending the Taunton Deane open meet. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Easter training dates

Millfield School have different Easter holidays to state schools, so here is the list of Easter training for those who swim at Millfield on a Thursday:

Thursday 27 March                          8-9.30pm                        Edgarly

Thursday 3 April                             8-9.30pm                        Edgarly

Thursday 10 April                             6.15-8.15pm                        As normal

Get with the Lingo

Short course – 25m Pool (e.g. Millfield Prep (Edgarly), Frome Leisure Centre)

Long course – 50m Pool (e.g. Millfield Pool)

When you swim the same event (e.g. 200m Fc) long course (4 lengths) and short course (8 lengths), the short course events should be faster than long course. This is due to the fact that there are fewer turns in a long course event (3 compared with 7). A turn gives a swimmer an advantage as you push off the wall faster than you swim. It is therefore very important that you record long course times separately to short course times, hence you will have two separate PB lists.
