Southern Junior League Final

After a very long-winded process the results for the second round were published, placing our final round at Bath.  We were hosting the gala, which ran very smoothly thanks to our hard working team of volunteers.  The swimmers made a great performance against Chard, Trowbridge, Weymouth, Clayesmore and Melksham.  We had met Weymouth in Round 2 and were beaten by a meagre 3 points and in round 1 we met Claysemore who beat us by only 11 points. In this exciting final, swimmers posted 29 individual PBs and 28 relay split PBs. At half way Frome were placed in 5th place above only Melksham, but only 5 points separated 5th and 2nd.  The team pulled together for the second half of the gala, raising our game with every swim.  After the last event Frome had 155 points, to finish 3rd behind Trowbridge (232) and Chard (200), and ahead of Weymouth (148), Clayesmore (140) and Melksham (118).  A fanstastic result for the Frome Southern Junior League Team.  First place finishes came from Lawrence Sims, Emily Dixon and the Boys 11/U Medley relay team.  A big well done to all who competed throughout the League Rounds.  We would also like to say a big thank you to Susie Hann and Nicky Brown for co-ordinating our team this year.

Club Championships

This Saturday was the first of our club championships.  Open to any member of the swimming club, passed through grade 4, it has been very successful so far.  We had over 50 swimmers aged from 8 to18 competing in 25, 50 and 100m events.  We have had 115 Personal Best times posted and 49 new times posted.  A fantastic result.  We look forward to further success in part two next week.

Locker Usage: Notice for All

As the changing facilities at Frome Leisure centre are small and used by many swimmers throughout the course of evenings, it is now imperative that swimmers either use lockers or bring their kit bags onto the poolside. Tuesday evening is especially problematic as we have over 200 swimmers passing through the changing rooms. It is no longer acceptable to leave loose kit around the changing rooms.  Please act on this before the centre staff have to.

Coach’s Report - Squad training

Swimmer of the Month

This swimmer has shown a fantastic attitude to training this month, even when conditions have been hard.  At competition this swimmer has shown me a hunger to achieve and move on in his swimming.

The swimmer of the month for May is

Lawrence Sims

Well done!

Karen’s Top Tip – Cross Training

Holidays are coming, six whole weeks to escape from school.   Yippee!!!! However it’s also a time where swimmers lose a lot of their fitness due to reduced training programmes.  As you have seen, we have arranged some training for the summer, but there are ways in which you can stay fit and still benefit your swimming without using the pool.  Cross training is a term used when referring to one sport that can help you to perform well in another sport.  Great sports to cross train for swimming are cycling, rowing, netball, basketball, tennis and cricket, so as your summer challenge let’s see how many you can try!!!!

NEW FEATURE: The Bigger Picture

What’s going on in World swimming this week?????

I don’t know how many of you know this, but this week the USA Olympic trials are being held.  The American Olympic trials are a massive event.  Competition to make the team can be tougher than the Olympic semi-finals!  It’s only 34 days to the Olympics themselves and so the pressure of qualifying then flying straight out to the event is massive.  So far (Monday 1st) Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte both broke the original world record (held by Phelps, 4:06.12) in the 400m IM.  Videos can be seen on youtube.  Phelps makes a 4:05 and Lochte a 4:06.06, it was an awesome race, which was won by Phelps’ final turn underwater.  There’s loads more races to be posted, and loads of records will be broken.

Workforce Development

Indians Require some Chiefs

We have a number of exciting positions within the club to help us develop our workforce of keen volunteers. Divided into small jobs we are looking for people to co-ordinate the development our time keepers, officials and coaches.  If you would like to help the club, but don’t want to get your feet wet, this could be an ideal job for you.  If you have any questions please let myself or Elaine help.

Coaches Development Seminars

Our next seminar will be on Saturday 19th July at Frome Leisure Centre 7.30am and will be on progressive practices for front crawl.  Following this there will be a short presentation about the new selection criteria for the squad.  This will affect all grades teachers and we recommend that you are there to ask any questions that you might have.  These criteria will be implemented from September.
