History
Frome Swimming Club was founded in 1877 initially as a 'men-only' club, swimming in the River Frome. At a later stage it transferred to the Victoria Pool in town, which was open between april and September only. At this time men trained on Tuesday evenings, and when the ladies section was formed, they swam on Mondays. To join the club, applicants had to be able to swim one length of breaststroke, backstroke and crawl properly. The club became a teaching club shortly before it moved to the new pool in the Leisure Centre, Frome in 1970.
The club has always had a strong water polo section, which has been successful at Bristol, County and District levels. At the Leisure Centre, the club purchased window nets and goals so that this tradition might continue.
The club celebrated its 125th year in 2002. We have more than 450 members; some 300 children are involved in our graded lessons on a Tuesday night, and 80 members make up our competitive squad.. In the past we also ran lifesaving classes and managed our own team of NPLQ-qualified lifeguards.
The adults who support the club - as officials, teachers, poolside helpers and committee members - number more than 50.
