GRADE PROGRESSIONS

 

In order to provide the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, swimmers should attempt all 10 aspects of the award, but are only required to pass 8.  However, items in stroke development must be achieved before progressing to the next grade.

 

GRADE 1

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

1.    Enter and exit the water using safe sitting entry/unassisted (no steps)

2.    Put face in the water and blow bubbles for 5 seconds

3.    Bob up and down to fully submerge head.  Repeat 6 times continuously

4.    Move freely around the pool using a combination of hop, skip, jump etc

5.    Open eyes under the water and identify an object selected by the teacher

6.    Without touching, move an object 5 metres using sculling action with hands

STROKE DEVELOPMENT

7.    Swim 5 metres (half length of small pool) on front

8.    Swim 5 metres (half length of small pool) on back

9.    Travel 10m using alternating leg kick on front (with float)

10.  Travel 10m using alternating leg kick on back (with float)

 

GRADE 2

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

1.    A star float on the back for 5 seconds

2.    A star float on the front for 5 seconds

3.    A mushroom float for 10 seconds

4.    Pick up an underwater object using both hands

5.    Submerge to sit on the pool floor

STROKE DEVELOPMENT

6.    Travel 10 metres on front - arms clearing water

7.    Travel 10 metres on back - arms clearing water

8.    Push and glide on the back for a distance of 3 metres

9.    Push and glide on front, face in water for a distance of 3 metres

10.  Stand with face in the water

            Breathe to side 6 times consecutively

            Breathe to front 6 times consecutively

 

GRADE 3

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

1.    Submerge to pick up an object from a depth of 0.9m

2.    Travel 5m on the front, roll and travel 5m on the back

3.    Scull head first on the back using figure of eight action with hands

4.    Tread water for ten seconds to include one 360 degree turn in the vertical position.

5.    Starting with push and glide travel 5m through a submerged hoop.

6.    Travel 5m on the front, demonstrate a forward somersault and continue for 5m

STROKE DEVELOPMENT

7.    Kick 10m on front using a breast stroke type kick, feet turned out using a float

8.    Swim 12m/1 width front crawl showing basic technique

9.    Swim 12m/1 width back crawl showing basic technique

10.  Using dolphin action kick 10m on the front or side
